ANTAGONIST NEW YORK ARTISTS COMING TO PROVIDENCE

FRIDAY, MAY 23, 2008

The Antagonist Art Movement, of New York’s East Village, announced that more than 20 New York based artists will be participating in a special exhibition, entitled “Behold the Antagonist Art Movement”, in Providence, Rhode Island.  The art show will open on Memorial Day Weekend and run for the following month.  The Dead Cat Gallery, located at 669 Elmwood Avenue, Suite A1, Providence, Rhode Island, is hosting the show.  www.deadcatgallery.com
The artists’ works are diverse and dynamic – videos, sculptures, interactive, photography, paintings and more – as selected by artist Ted Riederer.

The Providence exhibit will be an extension of the Antagonist’s October 2007 group art show in East Berlin, Germany, entitled “This is Berlin Not New York”.
The artists will be in attendance to discuss their work on opening night, Friday evening, May 23, from 7 pm to 9 pm.  Live entertainment, from 9 pm to 11 pm, will follow, featuring bands that complement the art exhibit.  Admission to the artists’ reception is free.  There will be a $10 cover charge for the entertainment that follows.

The New York artists welcome the opportunity to meet Rhode Island artists for an exchange of ideas, experiences and sociability.

The Antagonist Art Movement began in the East Village of New York City as a community of artists banding together to promote art, music and writing and to create a venue where underground artists could inspire and help each other while reaching a wider audience.  In describing the essence of the Antagonist Art Movement, Ethan Minsker, a founder, said, “I think the name says it all: ‘The Antagonist Art Movement’. We’re a group of artists in New York City who are trying to push art and ourselves and each other forward. And we share in the belief that art requires a little conflict. We want people to be inspired to make art whether or not you think you can. Just create. It’s as important as breathing to us.”  For more information on the Antagonist Art Movement, visit http://www.antagovision.com/

The general public is encouraged to attend the opening night event on Friday, May 23 and meet the New York artists.  Private showings of the exhibit can be arranged by contacting the Dead Cat Gallery at 401-709-4668.
